Despite 4 turnovers and 19 4th Quarter Points by TCU, Rutgers held on to win the Armed Forces Bowl 44-39. The game featured the long waited return of Tom Savage at the helm for the Scarlett Knights. Coming off a broken collarbone, Savage looked at times like the star he was anticipated to be and at some times the rust showed through. He went 16-28 for 358 4 TD and 4 INT. However, he did look good and the 2011 season looks bright in Brunswick. This is the second meeting this year between these 2 teams. Rutgers won the first game 28-17.
Martinex would start the scoring off with a 36 yrd TD run to tie the game at 7. TCU would answer with a TD pass from Dalton to go up 13-7. Savage would then hit Harrison from 32 yrds out to make it 14-13.Savage would then turn around and throw 1 of his 3 pick 6's to give TCU a 20-14 lead with 33 seconds left. Savage would hook up with Harrison for a 78 yrd TD to end the first half. Rutgers leads 21-20.
Savage would oppen the 3rd Quarter with a 28 yrd TD pass to Hayes to put Rutgers up 28-20. Savage would hit Hayes for a 33 yrd gain to the TCU 5 yrd and then Martinex would walk in from 5 yrds out to extend the lead to 35-20. Savage would throw another pick 6 to make it 35-26. The 2pt conversion would faile. The next play Savage hit from behind again and again a pick 6 resulted closing the gap to 35-33. Savage would get back on track and hit Sanuu for a 10 yrd TD to make it 42-33 with 3:56 to go. Dalton would run out the back of the endzone for a Scarlett Knight safety. Savage would drive down the fieeld only to throw a pic in the endzone. TCU would drive the length of the field and score. the 2 pt convo would fail again and the score would be 44-39. that would end up being the final score.
Rutgers would end the season with 10 wins and ranked in the top 10. A huge accomplishment considering the major injuries that they suffered in the first 3 games. Rutgers looks to imporove on this for next year and looks to win the Big East crown next year. that is if Ryan decides to stay. There are some rumors that have him going out west to take over the Washington program. We will keep you updated on this situation as it develops.
