New Head Coach Ryan Turner and the Minnesota Golden Gophers opened the 2011 football campaign with a 37-7 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats in Kentucky. Minnesota got down 7-0 early after there first two drives stalled and on Kentucky's 2nd drive on 4th and short from the 40 yard line M. Newton completed a streak to G. McCaskill who beat the 1 on 1 coverage by a good 5 yards as the Gophers dialed up a blitz expecting run and McCaskill was just able to run underneath the almost overthrown ball by Newton. Minnesota would respond on their very next drive with a 35 yard FG and would trail 7-3 after the 1st quarter. Minnesota would add another FG to make it 7-6 with 3:27 left in the 2nd q but on that drive they lost their star player QB Marqueis Gray. The defense would have to respond and redshirt freshman Tom Parish would have to come in and lead the new look Gophers flexbone offense. Parrish drove the team down the field and just before half time as the Gophers were looking to get in better position for a FG Parish would pitch to A Back Lamonte Edwards on a triple option and he would score from 25 yards out to take a 13-7 lead right before the half and the Gophers wouldnt look back from there shutting out the Wildcats the rest of the way and adding 17 pts in the 3rd q on a Hawthorne FG, a 29 yard run by B back Duane Bennett and a 1 yard run by QB Parish. Bennett would add another td run from 34 yards out in the 4th quarter.

When asked about his thoughts on his teams performance Coach Turner said "I was very pleased with Defensive co-ordinator Tracy Claeys unit's performance holding the Wildcats to 7 pts, 114 rushing yards and 91 passing yards and causing 3 turnovers. The offense struggled at times but that is to be expected as they all have to learn a brand new offense and they all were recruited by the former Head Coach who ran a multiple style offense."

Next up the Golden Gophers are on the road again and face the Ole Miss Rebels.

Good way to start the season. Tough luck with losing your QB. How long is he out? It looks like your offense hardly missed a beat without him

Good thing he is back. He seems like a great fit for your offense

Hey now don't be dogging my SEC, you know the BCS and poll voters don't like that they will seek revenge on your team Evil or Very Mad
