The Boilermakers come off an 11-3 2011 season with 19 graduating Seniors including starting QB Robert Marve. Purdue kicked off the 2012 season at home against Mississippi State and came through with a 31-19 win.

The Boilermakers received the ball to start the game. A slow drive down the field with several 3rd down conversions led to a Rob Henry to TE Gabe Holmes 11 yard TD pass to put Purdue up 7-0. The Bulldogs wasted no time once they received the ball, slicing and dicing through the Boilermaker defense for 10+ yards on every play of the drive. Purdue could not stop the run or the pass and Miss St scored in just over 30 seconds to tie the game 7-7. On the ensuing kick Ralph Bolden fumbled the ball to give the Bulldogs great field position. It did not look good for the Boilermakers.

With some defensive adjustments in place, Purdue was able to hold Miss St to a field goal (10-7). On the next drive, Purdue would take the lead on a 33 yard run up the middle by Bolden (14-10).

From there the teams would clamp down on the defense to force quick punts until the last minute of the half. Purdue put together a solid drive to get to 1st and goal inside the five with limited time on the clock. Purdue failed on the first two attempts. On their third attempt, Henry rolled to the right and tried to hit his Tight End on a slant pattern. Instead Miss State SS Jay Hughes picked the ball off to keep the score 14-10 heading into the half.

Miss St would get the ball to start the second half, but after a costly fumble Purdue would score on another Henry to Holmes pass, this time from 14 yards out (21-10).

The Bulldogs made a strong drive (like their first of the game) to get to inside the Boilermaker five. Purdue's defense clamped down and held Miss St to a field goal (21-13). The Boilermaker offense went cold and the Bulldogs drove the ball back down the field and scoring on an 8 yard pass to the half back LaDarius Perkins from Tyler Russell. Going for two and the tie, the Boilermaker line swarmed Russell, knocking him down as he threw the ball forcing the incompletion (21-19).

Purdue kept the ball on the ground for most of the rest of the game taking advantage of Bolden's speed and agility. On the second play of the next drive, Bolden took a pitch down the left sideline 59 yards to put the Boilermakers up 28-19. The Boilermakers added a field goal later in the fourth and their defense clamped down to hold on 31-19.

Coach Davis on the game "Mississippi State has some powerful weapons on offense. We forced a couple key turnovers in this game that changed the momentum of the entire game. Best of luck to the Bulldogs and they should have a strong season."
