Syracuse looks for leadership on defense from former running backs

Syracuse has three starters listed on the defensive depth chart, that used to be running backs. Max Suter, Derrell Smith, and Doug Hogue.

-Suter was an all-state running back in high school, but made the switch to safety in college due to his excellent tackling ability. His hands and speed, also make him a good fit into this finesse style Syracuse defense.

-Derrell Smith actually started a few games as a sophomore, however, in Doug Marrones first year as head coach, defensive coordinator, Scot Shafer was begging Marrone to let him switch Smith to linebacker. He did and now, Derrell is one of the best linebackers in the Big East and is a preseason finalist for the Butkus Award, which goes to the nation's top linebacker at the end of the season.

-Doug Hogue didn't quite pan out as a running back when he arrived at Syracuse in 2006. He asked for a switch to linebacker, as he had previous experience there in high school. He was granted the switch, and has now become a feared linebacker in the Big East, to join Smith.

"I couldnt have stepped into a better situation at this position, and that is not a having a situation at all, cuz Doug and Derrell are just great." sai Marrone

"Max, he does everything we as a coaching staff asks. He can hit, catch, and run, all things a safety has to be good at to be dominent. Im very excited about our defense this year" exclaimed Marrone.
