A&M Dominates Second Half, Beats #8 Hokies
College Station, Texas-The Aggies played their last non-conference game, until they meet Arkansas in the last month of the season, against the #8 Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies are the favorites to win the ACC and many had them running the table and getting all the way to the National Championship game, but A&M wasn't phased. The Hokies are thought of highly for good reason, they have a lot of weapons on offense and have a stout defense. In a game that featured the top rushing offense(Virginia Tech) and the top rushing defense(Texas A&M) something had to give.
Tannehill Finds an Opening
The Hokies received the ball to start the game, but a touchback by Bullock forced Virginia Tech to start at their own 20 yard line. The Hokies would really show why they have one of the best offenses in the country. They patiently drove down the field with a good mixture of runs and passes. After 10 plays the Hokies found the endzone for the early 7-0 lead. The Aggies would respond quickly as they moved down the field primarily behind the legs of FB Caleb Russell. A toss to Cyrus Gray would catch the Hokies' defense off guard as Gray strolled into the endzone to knot the game up at seven a piece.
Gray Takes the Pitch to Tie the Game
Virginia Tech's offense would look to respond following the Aggies' TD and did just that. This time it took them a little more work as they were held to a couple of third down attempts, but they still managed to get into the endzone. A&M got the ball back and moved into Virginia Tech territory very quickly, but then stalled and were left with a fourth-and-one. Coach Bryant elected to go for it, but the Hokies came up huge stopping Tannehill dead in his tracks. Virginia Tech capitalized on the opportunity and short field with a touchdown to go up 21-7 with under a minute left in the half. The Aggies were suddenly in trouble and elected to try and get some points before half. Tannehill fired a pass to McCoy that was nearly jumped by a Virginia Tech defender, but the defender missed and McCoy was off to the races. He was caught down at the one yard line. The Aggies ran down the clock to under ten seconds then Tannehill hit an open Jeff Fuller to cut the Hokies lead to 7 just before the half.
Fuller Lays Out for the Touchdown
The Aggies received the ball to start the second half and again were faced with a fourth-and-one that they went for and again were stopped short. Virginia Tech moved into field goal range but a missed field goal kept the score at 21-14. The second half would really be a excellent half for the Aggies defense for the second week in a row. Again they shut out their opponent in the second half. After the missed field goal A&M drove down the field looking to tie the game up, but were held to a short Bullock field goal instead. The Hokies got the all back but were stopped by the physical and fast Aggies defense. The Aggies had the ball to start the fourth and were looking to take their first lead of the game. After driving down to inside the 10 yard line, Tannehill did the rest of the work taking it in from the six for the 24-21 lead. The Hokies offense took the field trailing for the first time in the game, but were determined to take back the lead. With just over three minutes to go and the ball at the A&M 45 yard line, Taylor made his lone mistake of the day. Quick pressure off the edge forced a quick, off-balanced throw by Taylor that went straight to CB Harris. Harris made the catch to crush all of the Hokies' dream, a field goal with no time left would really end the game. Final score: Texas A&M-27 Virginia Tech-21
