The Bear Takes on His Old Team

College Station, Texas-It was an emotional day for Texas A&M Head Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant as he faced the team that he won 232 games and six national titles with. The Bear had not been to an Alabama game in nearly 30 years, and has yet to go back to Bryant-Denny Stadium. Coach Bryant was dreading the day he faced his the team where he built his legacy, because of all the distractions and side shows, but A&M could not ignore the lucrative offer the Tide gave to the Aggies just to go to A&M. The Aggies however, played like there were no distractions at all. The Lone Star Defense faced one of the most explosive and physical offenses in the country, and they dominated them. The Alabama offense look meek all game long and didn't get anything really good going until the last drive of the game. The Aggie's offense didn't play great, but they played plenty well enough to win.

The Tide got the ball to start the game and a good run by Richardson got the Tide deep in A&M territory. The defense tightened up and held the Tide to a field goal attempt. The kicker pushed it wide left and kept the game at 0-0. The Aggies offense was able to seize the momentum from the missed kick and marched it down the field. A couple of big third down conversions set up the Aggies at the 25 yards line. Gray got his only rush of the game, he got injured a few plays later, and made the most of it. He took a toss out right and weaved his way through traffic for the 7-0 Aggies lead.

Gray Scores for the Aggies Thanks to his Blockers

The Crimson Tide would be held to a three and out on their next drive and A&M would get the ball back. This series would result in an Aggies score, but it would cost them much more than they gained. On the first play of the drive Russell blocked the defensive end and got hit at a weird angle. He went off to the sideline holding his side. It was determined that he broke his ribs and will miss at least 8 weeks. Two plays later when Gray went out to block a linebacker he landed awkwardly on his arm and sprained his wrist. He will be out at least 3 weeks, so in three plays two of the Aggies top three rushers from last year and this year went down with injuries. The good news for the Aggies is that there are plenty of other horses in the stable. The Aggies would go down the field and the new starter at FB McCoy made his first mark. He took a rush in from 11 yards out to put the Aggies up 14-0. The Freshman McCoy showed in the game that he has the tools to be the teams leading rusher.

McCoy with His First Career Touchdown

The rest of the game would be A&M increasing its lead and making a couple of stabs at cutting into it. The Crimson Tide would only score two times in the game. One at the end of the half and the other at the end of the game. A&M's defense would go on to score a late touchdown that would make it appear that their offense played better than they did. The Aggie's defense really showed the nation why it is so good. Their defensive line is quick and agreesive and very hard to block, their linebackers are fast and physical, and their secondary is amazing. The secondary is really what makes this team so great. McQueen and Harris are two of the best corners in the country and FS Ryan Williams is maybe the best safety in the entire nation. This group has really improved in the offseason and it has showed so far as the Aggies dominate oppositions offenses. Next week Texas A&M will take on Michigan and former Mississippi State Head Coach Gary Patterson along with former Offensive Coordinator Brian Bohannon in a continuation of the Sweet Southern Showdown Rivalry.
