It took 4 overtimes to decide the meeting between #6 Nebraska and #12 Rutgers. Rutgers made the long trip to Lincoln to battle the Big 12 Powerhouse in an attempt to bolster their up and coming image, and it worked. Things looked like it was going to pick up where last year ended when Savage hit Harrison for his 30th Career TD, to put Rutgers up 7-0. The next drive ended when Savage was oicked in the endzone to end the first quarter. Both teams would trade FG's in the 2nd quarter. The score was 10-3 at the half.
The second half began with Savage throwing another Red Zone Pick this one going to the house from 81 yrds out to tie the game at 10. Burkhead would score from 4 yrds out to put Nebraska up for the first time 17-10 to end the third quarter.
Savage would be knocked out of the game temporarily and DC Jefferson would then take the reigns at QB. He would walk in from 22 yrds out to ie it back up at 17. Not to be outdone, Burkhead would scamper in from 22 yrds out to again put Nebraska up 24-17 with 1:39 to play. Like Rutgers did many times last year, they put together a last minute TD drive capped off by Jefferson plunging in from 1 yrd out with :11 seconds on the clock to again tie it at 24.
In the first OT Burkhead would power his way in for a TD from 5yrds out and Savage would return to the game and scramble out to score from 13 yrds out. Score tied again at 31. Jefferson would start the second OT taking an option himself to the house from 14 yrds out to put Rutgers up 38-31. Burkhead would break 3 tackles on 3rd and 8 to rumble his way into the endzone to tie it up and then take it in from 8 out to in the 3rd OT to put Nebraska back ahead after a converted 2pt play 46-38. Not to be outdone, Jefferson would take the first play in the third OT to the Nebraska 1 yrd line and FB O'Neal would plunge in and Rutgers would convert the 2 pt play to force a 4th OT at 46-46. Nebraska would miss their FG attempt and Freshman kicker Bryant would come in on 3rd and 7 to boot the game winning 29 yrd FG for Rutgers to end this marathon opening game for both teams at 49-46. This is a huge win for the Rutgers Program and now they have 2 weeks to prepare for the Maize and Blue in week 3. Everyone is excited about the 2012 Season here in Brunswick.
