In the first meeting of what will hopefully become the game of the year and/or conference championship for the Pac-10, Cal traveled the 375 miles to Los Angeles to take on the UCLA Bruins.
On a damp and rainy day, one would expect tons of turnovers given that both QBs have thrown for 20+ each, but the stat of the day for Cal was 0(ZERO) INTs by QB K.Riley.
The day started as a defensive battle with Cal striking first blood on a short TD pass to A.Miller, after holding UCLA to a punt, Cal took the ball and drove down into the redzone and let Vereen notch his first TD of the game. Then UCLA's dynamic offense took off and pounded its way down to the redzone, after converting on 4th and inches inside the 5yd line, it took 3 downs to finally pound get into the endzone and put UCLA on the board. With less than 2 mins remaining in the half, Cal quickly passed its way down the field and Riley threw his 2nd TD of game to WR Calvin with 20sec remaining in the half.
The second half started off with UCLA getting the ball and proceeding to march their way down to put up another TD, but Cal's defense held strong and held UCLA to a FG. Cal's first possession of the half chewed time and distance as Vereen would scamper into the endzone for his 2nd TD of game and 10th TD of the season. Down 28-10, UCLA started to realize the hole they were in and started a great drive until QB K.Prince would throw the first INT of the game and Cal returned it for a TD to pull ahead even more. Even being down 35-10 going into the 4th, UCLA wouldn't give up. UCLA drove the field and scored on a beautiful pass from Prince for another TD. After Cal tried to run some clock, but couldn't manage a 1st down; UCLA would take the punt and the first play after would score on a long 60yd pass from Prince. After missing the 2pt conversion to try to pull within 10, Cal again tried to run some clock and again fail to manage a 1st down. Cal seemed unable to stop UCLA in the 4th and at the same time generate little offense, but 3 4th quarter INTs by Cal including the game clinching 69yd INT TD return proved too much for UCLA to overcome.
The game proved to be very entertaining and almost seemed like UCLA was going to comeback, but TOs proved too much to overcome and allowed Cal to escape LA with its Pac-10 title hopes still alive. This game will surely be one of many great battles of the in-state rivals. While it isn't defined as a rivalry, this will turn into one before all is said and done. Congrats to UCLA and alief on a game well played.
