In a driving rain, the #20 Tigers and #9 Buckeyes played a epic game in front of a sold out Death Valley. Unfortunately for the 80,000 plus in attendance the Tigers could not complete a 17 point second half comeback, with a desperation pass falling to the turf in the endzone as time expired.
Early in the game the physical Buckeyes flexed their offensive and defensive muscle. The smash mouth offense ground out four drives deep into Clemson territory. The Tigers were fortunate to only allow 17 points on those drives. Meanwhile the Buckeye defense obliterated everything the moved, harassing Kyle Parker into 2 interceptions and forcing a fumble. The tigers showed a spark at the end of the first half, driving inside of the buckeyes 40, but were not able to get within FG range and a 4th down attempt was stopped by the OSU defense.
The Tigers received the ball in the second half and finally mounted some offense with Parker throwing a short TD pass to bring the score to 17 - 7. On the ensuing kickoff the Tigers appeared to recover a fumble but replay officials overturned the call. OSU was again able to use their ground game and capped off a drive with a 40 yard TD run to again expand the lead to 17 point. Clemson answered quickly when Kyle Parker hit the tiger halfback in the flat on a all out blitz for a 35 yard TD to cut the gap to 24 - 14 at the end of the third quarter.
The Clemson defense finally answered the bell. Stopping OSU for the first time since early in the game. The tigers took the ball and again drove the field for a short TD run to make the score 24 - 21. Clemson's defense held again around midfield but the offense could do nothing with poor field position. The tiger D would again stuff OSU at midfield and this time Parker drove the tigers to the edge of FG range, however on 2nd and 1 from the 30, Parker, off play action, would take a costly sack to move his team out of FG range. Unable to convert on 3rd and 4th down, OSU got the ball back with a minute and a half to play.
The game wasn't over yet as two holding penalties helped the tigers stop the clock and get the ball back with 40 seconds to go. Parker got his team to the OSU 45 with 6 seconds to play. On the final play, a jump ball in the endzone was knocked to the ground by an OSU defender to preserve the buckeye victory.
