Mississippi State took the field against UNC after shocking news that their former coach was lost at sea last week in an unfortunate deep sea fishing expedition in the Gulf of Mexico. Not surprising Mississippi State took the field with heavy hearts and looked a little sluggish on offense as they continue to take an accelerated crash course through Coach Walker's offensive scheme. The run game looked like it was going to be in big trouble early on when starting RB Ballard went down with an undisclosed injury. But fellow senior and backup RB Robert Elliott stepped in and showcased his speed as well as his ability to shoulder a bulk of the running load. He rushed 20 times for a modest 90 yards and a td while also snagging 4 receptions for 58 yards. Walker was pleased with the running game today but vowed to tweak his offense and implement a more up tempo, no huddle offense now that he has a better understanding of what they can actually do during a game!
The defense was the lone bright spot on the day. Holding the Tar Heels to 75 yards on the ground and 153 through the air! As the 4th quarter began, UNC was knocking on the door looking to take the lead, but the defense stood firm and forced the play of the game, an interception that Broomfield returned 78 yards to the house! After momentum clearly shifted to the Bulldogs side, the Tar Heels could not muster any more offense as they bowed out of this contest, losing 24-13 in Coach Walker's first win as the Mississippi State head coach. We all here at Mississippi State are sad that we lost our head coach in such shocking fashion but encouraged with the direction the program is headed as Coach Walker takes over!
