Kansas Cracks the A&M Defense, but the Aggies Survive
Lawrence, Kansas-For the first time all season the A&M defense struggled to stop it's opponent, the Kansas Jayhawks. Throughout the season the Aggies have not defended the pass great but no one had been able to run on them until this week. The previously porous Kansas running game managed over 90 yards rushing, the Aggies had previously given up 60 yards in four games. Along with the rushing yards, Texas A&M gave up 300 yards passing as well. However, the Aggies offense came to play leading them to victory number 5 on the season.
Fuller Makes the Catch in Traffic
The game could not have started off worse for the Aggies. Kansas received the opening kick and marched right down the field through the sluggish looking Aggies defense. The Aggies offense got the ball and was looking to answer back quickly and it appeared they did on the very first play when Tannehill took the option and rushed down the right sideline for the 75 yard touchdown, but there was a flag down on the play. The holding was only the sixth penalty on the Aggies for the season, but it was a costly one. On the very next play Tannehill kept on the option to the left this time, but as he was going down the ball was dislodged from his grasp ad recovered by the Jayhawks. On the very next play Kansas found itself on top by 14 thanks to a nice TD pass. This was the largest amount the Aggies have trailed by since trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State. Just like the Mississippi State game the Aggies fought back. An Aggies touchdown drew them within seven points then a three and out gave them the ball back and they scored again. The Aggies defense would make a huge play on the next drive as pressure would force a ball into the air that Senior Von Miller would snag.
Big Boy with the Pick
From then on the Aggies would never trail, but the Jayhawks certainly wouldn't go away. They kept pace as best as possible, but the high powered Aggies offense kept the pressure on and would not let up. Early in the third quarter Tannehill would make the play that broke the back of the Jayhawks. Following a sack the Aggies would be inside their 2 yard line with a 2 down and 18. The triple option was called in the huddle and Coach Bryant and staff were just hoping to to make it a third down and manageable. Tannehill took the snap put the ball in Russell's belly and made his reads. His read told him to keep to take the ball, and he moved onto the next level. The pitch read went to HB Stephens and Tannehill cut up field. When he made his cut there was nothing but grass in front of him. Tannehill put on the jets and raced his way 98 yards for the touchdown. Tannehill needed a lot of oxygen afterwards, but it was worth it as he put his team in a great position to win the game.
Tannehill Displays the Wheels
From then on the Fourth ranked Aggies would continue to struggle and play sluggishly, but they would be far enough ahead that it wouldn't really matter. More ball control offense and some decent play by the defense would help the Aggies move to 5-0. The second string cleaned up the game and finished of the unranked Jayhawks by a score of 51-35. Next week the Aggies will travel back home to the friendly confines of Kyle Field to take on the Jayhawks big rival the Missouri Tigers. The Tigers have struggled al year and the Aggies look to make sure that continues.
