Aggies Beat Up Bears; Claim the Brazos

Waco, Texas-The Baylor Bears came into this year's Battle of the Brazos flying high with a 5-2 record and led by Superstar Robert Griffin. The Bears felt like they had a legitimate shot at taking a Big 12 South crown, but in order to even think about that they had to beat the Aggies. The Aggies have the all-time series lead 66-31 with 9 tiesincluding last year's beat down of the Bears in College Station 51-21. Of course last year Baylor was looking to beat A&M for consecutive times for the first time since 84-85. Baylor held their own in the first half nearly having the lead going into the break, but the second half turned into a blowout. The Bears were also looking for back-to-back home wins in the series which hasn't happened since 1979 and 1981.

Everybody was excited to see what Griffin and the Bears offense could do on offense after moving the ball well the last two years on the Aggies defense, but this time the Aggies stellar D was ready for the Bears offensive attack. Baylor Coach Art Briles went on to say after the game that the Aggies defense was "the fastest and most physical" defense in the entire country. He would go on to say, "Those boys down in Austin may have the name of the state, but them boys in College Station have the best defense in the state. The truly have the Lone Star Defense." And thus the nickname the defense has been looking for is born thanks to Coach Briles. The Lone Star Defense took the field first and held the Bears to -8 yards and a three-and-out on the first drive. Tannehill took the field for the Aggies and drove them right down the field for the quick 7-0 lead. Another disaster of a drive for Baylor gave the ball right back to the fired up Aggies. Yet again the Aggies marched down the field with ease to set them up at the 1 yard line. Tannehill gave the ball to Russell who leapt up and over the Baylor defense for the score and 14-0 lead.

The Bears knew they were getting themselves into an uphill battle and if they wanted any chance of digging themselves out they needed a score right then and there. They finally were able to muster a first down, but that was all as the Lone Star Defense put the clamps on the Bears. Baylor again punted back to the Aggies who again made quick work of the Baylor defense. This time they would set up shop at the nine yard line. Tannehill got the ball call and came up to the line. He knew another touchdown would essentially end all the hopes and dreams of the Baylor faithful. Tannehill made his reads and kept the ball up inside where he followed his blockers to the endzone for the 21-0 lead.

Tannehill Goes in Untouched

That touchdown really ended all hopes that Baylor had as they were now in a huge hole. Baylor however would not give up as they tried to cut into the sizable Aggies lead, but yet again the Lone Star Defense proved to be too tough for the once vaunted Baylor offense. Before the first half came to an end the Aggies would add another 10 points to the board thanks to a Bullock field goal and a Tannehill TD pass to McCoy. For the second year in a row the Aggies hung 31 first half points on the Bears but this year the Bears could not muster a single first half point much less the 21 they scored in the first half last year. So both teams went into the break knowing that the Aggies would come out with their 67th win in the series.

McCoy Makes the Easy TD Catch

The second half would be merely a formality for the outcome of the game. The Aggies were able to control the clock and add 13 more points before the game ended and the Bears were able to avoid the shutout with a 30 yard run to paydirt. The story of the day was really the Aggies defense that held a very good Baylor offense to basically nothing all day. Robert Griffin, who recently was hoping to make the All-Conference squad, just hopes to have his team hang on for a good bowl game. For the second week in a row the Aggies have put on a solid performance in all three phases of the game. The defense kept Baylor well under 200 total yards of offense while the Aggies offense churned out over 400 yards themselves. Then of course the special teams played like it's normally solid self with Bullock connecting on all three of his field goals and all of his extra points. The Aggies hardly even celebrated their victory over inferior Baylor as they know they have a huge game next week with revenge and upset minded Oklahoma. The Aggies keep inching closer to the big showdown with the Horns, but know they still have a lot of work cut out for them.
