Rutgers tried to shoot themselves in the foot on more then one occasion today as they hosted #16 TCU. Despite turnovers and penalties the Scarlett Knights pulled out the victory to improve to 7-3. The game started as a defensive battle until SR CB Brandon Bing intercepted TCU and returned it 17 yrds to setup a 19 yrd TD run by DC Jefferson. Jefferson's long awaited return was all that it had been anticipated. He would throw for ofver 250 yrds and 2 scores while eclipsing the century mark on the ground. Rutgers would lead 7-3 when TCU's stout defense stopped Martinex on a 4th and goal from the 1 yrd line. Jefferson would then hook up with Harrison for an 88 yrd TD pass to go up 14-3.
This is where things go a little south for the Scarlett Knights. SR SS Joe Lefeged would grab the second INT for the Knights and set them up to go up at least 2 TD's. Then, Jefferson on a scramble would fumble and TCU would return it 57 yrds to make the score 14-10 with :44 seconds left in the half. On the ensuing drive Rutgers, who should have sat on the ball, threw a pic that was returned to the Rutgers 25. Next play Dalton goes up top for a 25 yrd TD to take a 17-14 lead with :33 seconds left. On the next drive, Jefferson would throw an 80 yrd TD only to have it brought back on a holding call. TCU led at the half 17-14.
The third quarter would be much of the same. The opening drive Jefferson would drive down the field only to have the drive end on a pic in the endzone. Again, Rutgers defense would hold and Jefferson would throw his second TD that would be brought back on a holding call. However, this time on 3rd and 18, Jefferson would hit Martinex for a 21 yrd TD to make it 21-17 with 1:07 to go in the 3rd.
The 4th quarter would again, go back and fourth defensively until Jefferson's bootleg would make it 28-17 with 1:29 left in the game. This capping a 16 play drive spanning over 4 minutes.Jefferosn on a 3rd and goal from the 2 would keep it on the playaction and walk in to seal the game for the Scarlett Knights.
This marks the Knight's 3rd straight win. Next up is their Big East finale at #14 Cincinnatti. They need a win there and a loss by WVU and USF to take the Big East crown.
