Purdue finishes a strong season at 11-3 with a 24-21 win over Alabama. The Boilermakers bounced back from their embarrassing 34-0 loss to Minnesota in the first ever Big Ten Championship Game.
Alabama received the ball to start the game. It was all offense to start, and both teams scored on their first two drives 14-14. Defensive adjustments were made and the ball was punted back and forth a couple times, when the Boilermakers received the ball on their own 1 yard line with less than 2 minutes in the half. On 3rd and 9 from the 2, FB Jared Crank pushed the line forward for 9 yards and a first down by a nose hair. The Boilermakers continued to drive all the way down the field, when they opted for a 22 yard Carson Wiggs field goal to go ahead 17-14 before the half ended.
Purdue received the ball to start the 3rd, but were quickly shut down. Alabama drove down the field, but were stuffed at midfield. On 4th and 3 with a 3 point lead, the Boilermakers relaxed. The Crimson Tide took advantage with a fake punt for a first down! The drive continued until they were up 21-17.
Purdue would come back with a solid drive and take the lead on Ralph Bolden's third touchdown run just into the 4th quarter (24-21).
It was all defense on both sides from there out. Alabama received the ball back on their 20 with less than a minute to go and no timeouts remaining. On the first play Crimson Tide QB AJ McCarron stepped back and threw a bomb deep to the right. Boilermaker SS Logan Link leaped above the WR to pull the ball away for an interception on his last play in College Football. This sealed the win and capped a solid season for the Boilermakers.
Coach Davis on the season, "We were picked to win 6 games this season, so we blew away the so called experts. 11 wins and the 3 losses were to the #1 and #3 ranked teams in the country. I am happy with the results. Now we need to build on that for next season, we just need to convince [Ralph] Bolden not to head to the Pro's."
