FINALLY...a great shutdown game from the defense!! It wasn't pretty as they allowed over 180 yards rushing against but they completely shut down the passing game in a classic bend but don't break philosophy. This game was a grind throughout even though the scoreline might not suggest it. Key plays made at key times and key decisions made by Coach Rowe were the difference in this one.
From the opening kickoff the Wolfpack fans thought that they had something to cheer about when TJ Graham returned the opening KO for a TD...but, a holding call brought the ball all the way back to the 19 yard line and the Pack went 3 and out. The Georgia Tech Yellowjackets were kept at bay as well and this trend continued for some time until the Yellowjackets decided to go for it on a 4th and 1 on the Pack 10 yard line and were stuffed!! A nice turning point but it wasn't until a Fumble by GTech on their 30 that the Pack was able to capitalize and soon after scored to build a 7-0 lead. Just before half the Pack extended the lead on a Mustafa Greene 1 yard run with 1 second left and no timeouts...a big gamble that paid off as the Pack took a 14-0 lead to the break.
In the second half, GTech scored to cut the lead in half but the Pack were able to mix up their plays nicely and Greene once again found the endzone to make it 21-7. Greene scored his third TD of the afternoon to seal this one and send the NC State faithful home happy and raise the Wolfpack record to 5-0 as they head into a long 2 weeks off before returning to action.
Rest assured there will be a lot of focus on improving the defense and it will be a good time for nagging injuries to heal. Heading into the break Coach Rowe likes the direction this team is heading but is not resting on the teams laurels or success thus far..."there are many games remaining against some great teams...we just have to prepare for each on a game by game basis and keep our focus on the goal from the start of the season which was and continues to be...winning the ACC title!"
QB Glennon 10-19 196yrds 1 TD 1 INT
RB Greene 30rushes for 126yrds 3 TDs
