Purdue came into the game pumped up to get the Purdue Cannon back against rival Illinois. The offense was hot in the first quarter with the Boilermakers jumping out to a 21-7 lead on three big plays including Bolden's 64 yard rushing TD.
Illinois made some adjustments and stormed back to take a 28-21 lead early in the 3rd. Purdue countered with their own game plan adjustments and FB Jared Crank found the end zone to tie the game 28-28 in the middle of the 3rd quarter.
Purdue's defense locked down the Illini to get the ball back. The offense drove the ball down the field for a go ahead field goal with 21 seconds left in the 3rd (31-28).
The Illini drove the ball slowly down the field and hit a 44 yard field goal with 3:29 left in the 4th (31-31).
On the ensuing drive, QB Robert Marve threw his third interception of the game and it did not look good for the Boilermakers. Illinois tried to run the clock down, but Purdue made a stop and saved some time by using all of there time outs. Illinois took the lead with a 23 yard field goal with 1:22 left to play (34-31).
Purdue needed a big play to get back in the game and they found that play in HB Ralph Bolden. With the Illini looking for a pass, Purdue ran a counter. Bolden broke a tackle and no one else was close to touching him. 53 yards down the sideline...Touchdown! Purdue took the lead 38-34 with 41 seconds to play. The defense kept Illinois at bay as they ran out of time. This is a game that will be talked about in West Lafayette for some time!
