High Flying Eagles Win on Last Second Field Goal
College Park, Maryland--Boston College was looking to have a game in which they finally broke away from an opponent but that was not the case against Maryland. The BC defense played one of its worst games all season and it nearly cost the Eagles. BC would be pushed dow to the final seconds when they hit a field goal as time expired to win the game.
The high scoring first quarter would set the tone for the game as there was a combined 35 points in the quarter. On Maryland's first drive D. Adams would break off a 61 yard touchdown run. Not to be outdone, Montel Harris, the Heisman Hopeful running back for Boston College would score on a 65 yard run on BC's first play from scrimmage. WIth that the shootout was on.
Harris Breaks Off a Long TD Run
Adams had a point to prove and he went on proving it all game. On the next drive the Terps would get just past midfield and Adams would shed tacklers and he was gone again. This time from 49 yards out and he was already over the century mark for the game. Montel Harris who watched Adams run wild from the sideline tried to make his case for the best back on the field and he went right about proving it. Harris would slice through the defense and score for 21 yards out tying the game at 14.
Harris Scores his Second TD of the Day
Boston College would finally get a stop but they would be at their own 20 for the next drive. Rettig would waste little time however as he went up top to Larmond on the first play and connected for the 80 yard touchdown. The score would put BC on top, for the first time all day, 21-14.
80 Yard Touchdown Strike
The rest of the half would be much calmer than the first couple of drives as both teams finally settled in. Maryland would add a short field goal and a 75 yard touchdown while BC would only manage a short field goal of their own and the half time score would read 24-24.
In the second half both defenses would play much better and let up hardly any huge plays. Boston College would kick another field goal but with 1:45 left in the quarter Adams would score again putting Maryland on top 31-27 going into the fourth. All year the fourth quarter has been owned by Boston College and that would prove true again. Rettig would find TE Chris Pantale open for a 35 yard score putting BC back on top, 34-31.
Pantale Puts BC Back on Top
Maryland would need a field goal to tie and with 1:36 left in the game they got it. They were stopped three times on the drive, but three awful roughing the passer calls kept them moving, on of which the QB ran into his own guy and got the flag. Boston College stepped up on D to hold them to a field goal despite all the adversity. Rettig and the Boston College offense would be left with plenty of time to get into field goal range. On the first play Rettig found Momah and BC was suddenly on the cusp of Freese's range. Two runs plays later it was third-and-five with under 45 seconds to go and a field goal from here would be about 53 yards which is just out of range. On the big third down play Rettig his Anderson on a dig route and Anderson was finally dragged down inside the Terps 20. A run play to the middle to set up the kick was all that was left. Nick Freese trotted onto the field with 3 seconds left and a chance to keep his team's perfect season alive. he had missed a kick with no time left against ND that could have prevented overtime but this kick was considerably shorter and lined up in the middle. Freese booted the kick through the uprights and Boston College had won again.
Freese Nails the Game Winner
Freese was mobbed on the field and BC celebrated yet another close win. Boston College is making a habit out of winning these close games as they have now won five games decided by a score or less including three such games in a row and two overtime games. The trend could very likely continue next week when the host the Florida State Seminoles who are fresh of an upset victory over perviously unbeaten NC State. Boston College is going to have to get better on defense to win the game next week. Final: 37-34
