Boston College vs North Carolina State BCvsNCState

Boston College Falls to the Wolfpack

Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts--Boston College had been riding a wave of late game success that moved them to 10-0 going into the NC State game but it all came crashing down with a heartbreaking loss to the Wolfpack. BC had its fair share of chances but the ball just didn't bounce their way as NC State took advantage of key errors.

Boston College lost the toss and received to open up the game. The Eagles promptly marched down the field getting to the NC State 1 yard line. With a run play called Chase Rettig made a mistake by audibling to a pass. He then made another mistake thinking that NC State was in man he threw a pass to the flats but the Wolfpack were in zone and the pass resulted in a pick six.

Rettig Makes a Fatal Error

So just like that BC goes from feeling great about their start to felling terrible about their start. The Eagles would try to answer back but after crossing midfield WR Larmond was stripped of the ball and the NC State offense would come onto the field for the first time. It didn't take long for the BC defense to make its presence felt. On the first play Luke Kuechly crushed Mustafa Greene who fumbled the ball. BC picked up the loose ball and ran it in to tie the game at 7.

NC State would put a good drive together and score to take the lead back 14-7. Boston College was determined to keep the pace and did. Rettig threw into the endzone again but this time found his target, WR Swigert for the 4 yard TD and tie the game at 14.

Swigert Ties the Game Up

After trading stops the Wolfpack would gain possession and look to strike quickly. They did just that when Glennon went up top to Graham. Graham got past the defense and scored a 80 yard touchdown putting NC State back in front 21-14 in the see-saw battle.

BC would try to put together one last drive before halftime. The drive would end in points but would prove to be the most costly drive of the game. Harris took the ball and ran right where he was hit by a NC State defender and went down in pain. He would be helped off the field and shortly after news trickled down that he had torn his abdominal muscles and would be done for the season. A few plays later Freese would kick a FG with no time left on the clock but BC went into the locker room with their heads down.

In the third quarter BC would struggle to find its identity after season their Heisman hopeful running back go down. NC State would jump on this and score 10 third quarter points and take a seemingly insurmountable 31-17 lead into the fourth quarter. Kimble would try his best filling in for Harris, but it wasn't the same. He was able to cut the lead to seven points early in the fourth and BC had life. Both defenses played well but the Eagles had a chance with two minutes left. A fourth down and five would be the Eagles last hope. Rettig fired a pass to Swigert who hauled it in but as he was going to the ground the ball came free and NC State had it sealed up.

Swigert Drops the Fourth Down Pass

NC State would drain the little remaining clock and walk out of Chestnut Hill with a victory. The loss visibly stung Boston College who had achieved so much in the season already. The Eagles will have a bye week to think about what could have been then they are on to their season finale against the Miami Hurricanes. They will have to regroup quickly and find a way to offset the loss of HB Harris. Final: 31-24

Nice write up Ceps...the loss of your RB for the season was HUGE!! NC State was able to take advantage of that and just hold on! This was a hard fought see-saw battle that could have gone either way for sure. The bounces went the Wolfpack's way in this one and the defense did just enough to secure the win away from home and keep their dreams of an ACC championship berth alive for another week. One more tough game remaining against the Turtles from Maryland (Just finished beating Clemson 31-17) and hopefully the boys will be up to the challenge! The Defense is playing much better under Coach Rowe since he took over and the players to a man are looking to end the season off strong!
