The Scarlett Knights of Rutgers got the 2010 Season off to a great start today with a 52-31 shootout win at Iowa State. The win did however, cost the Scarlett Knights a huge price. Star QB Tom Savage was hurt early ib the 1rst quater and would not return for the game. He threw only 2 passes one going for the game's first points in a 52 yrd TD to Joe Martinex. After the game Coach Ryan did announce that Savage did in fact break his collarbone and will miss the next 12 weeks. This is costly to the Knights, since depth at QB is the one thing that they lack. Through combined efforts of DC Jefferson and Mike Latimer the Knights did muster enough QB play to secure the win, but that will be a major concern the rest of the season.

Joe Martinex shined both on the ground and through the air. Nartinex rushed fr 104 yrds on 22 carries and a TD, he also caught 5 passes for 98 yrds including that 52 yrd TD from Savage.

Jefferson, a converted TE, took the reigns for the Knights and did an average job through the air. He was more effective on the ground rushing 11 times for 109 yrds and a TD. Mike Latimer saw some time as well as the Knights will look to find a replacement for Savage.

The Knights opened up the scoring but quickly fell behind 14-7. Martinex would plunge it in from 6yrds out to tie it up. ISU would then drive down the field and retake the lead 17-14. Jefferson connected on an 82 yrd TD strike to Junior Julian Hayes with 1 minute left in the half, however the Knights defense would squander that lead late when ISU's QB A. Amaurd throws a TD with 3 seconds on the clock. The Knights trailed at the half 24-21.

Ryan got the defense in line for the second half as it was all Knights in the second half. Holding ISU to only 7 points in the half. That coming off a Martinex fumble that was taken to the house. The Knights would trail for the last time 31-28. Jefferson hit Sopmore Lamar Graves for a 32 yrd TD off playaction to take the lead for good at 35-31. The next drive sealed thedeal for the Knights. A 15 play 4:51 drive that was capped by a 4 yrd TD run by Jefferson to make it 42-31. The knights would add a late FG and a Pick 6 to endit. Final Score 52-31, but it was a lot closer then the score would suggest.

The win is bitter sweet for the Knights, but Coach Ryan was positive in saying "We need to pull it togetheras a team. That is what makes teams great. How you handle adversity is key. This is a major setback but we have the guys to step up and make the plays we need in Tom's absence."

They will need to step up and step up quick. The next 4 games are as follows:
-#5 Wisconsin
-@#10 Ohio State
-@#6 PITT
-@#11 WVU
This is a brutal schedule for the knights even if they had Savage taking the snaps. Rutgers and Ryan have a lot of work to do this week to prepare for #5 Wisconsin for their home opener in Brunswick.

GAME STATS
Rutgers
237 yrds Rushing
203 yrds Passing
440 Total yrds of Offense

Iowa State
86 yrds Rushing
