Second half Orange comeback, sparks huge win
In what the looked like Syracuse was going to get an early start after safety Philip Thomas intercepted the Dayne Crist pass on the first play from scrimmage, the Orange could only muster 2 field goals throughout the first half. Notre Dame struck back on the ensuing drive and scored on an 88yd touchdown pass to running back Armando Allen. Every other drive except for Syracuses next drive, which ended in another field goal, would be a punt for both teams. Score at the break 7-6 Fighting Irish.
The second half would start with Syracuse driving the field but would end shortly after freshamn backup filling in for Nassib, threw a pick, his 3rd on the year. However, no hurt would be done as Notre Dame kicker D. Ruffer would miss a 48 yard field goal to give the Orange back the ball. The next 2 drives failed for both teams. Delone Carter, at the time had 57 yards rushing, until he broke 2 tackles on his way to an 86 yard run giving the Orange the 13-7 lead. Carter would finish the day with 171yds on 30 carries with 1 touchdown.
The next Irish drive would find ND at the Orange 6 yard line, until defensive end Chandler Jones popped the ball out of Allen's hands, it would be scooped up by linebacker Malcolm Cater and taken to the house, 94 yards. 20-7 Cuse. On the kickoff, ND returned it to the house to kill all momentum, however, a flag was thrown on the run back and put the Irish back at their own 5 yard line. The first play, the Ornage read the Crist led offense and called an all-out blitz and Mikhail Marinovich sacked Crist on a playaction pass before he could even turn to see his receivers. 2 more field goal would come from Cuse kicker Ross Krautman making the score 28-7, which would be the final score.
The Orange will make the trip back to New york as the Pitt Panthers come in next week. The Orange and now 4-1.
