Due to technical difficulties, the Oregon St. - UNC match-up took more than one game to identify a victor, both games polar opposites.
Around 11:30 CST, the coaches of both OSU and UNC happened to be online. They messaged back and forth and decided to play their game despite one user's poor internet connection.
The first game began around midnight CST and looked like a great one from the start. After driving to the OSU 15, UNC fumbled the ball away at the 2 after a 13 yard pass. OSU was held scoreless on their ensuing possession, to which UNC responded with a TD. OSU came right back with a TD of their own. After a few more possessions, half-time came around and OSU held a slim 10-7 lead.
OSU received the kick, was stopped on their ensuing drive, and UNC began driving. After 5 or 6 plays, user tlu306 lost his internet connection, giving Coach Lawrence Taylor and user mubulldog14 quite a predicament.
"We were moving the ball well on that drive, and I can say in confidence that we could have beaten the CPU," said Coach Taylor when asked why he quit the game rather than continue versus the CPU. "We wanted a fair W though, so we quit and rechallenged user tlu306."
What a mistake that would prove to be for the Tar Heels.
In the second game, user tlu306 relied on two plays to gash the Tar Heel defense.
"We ran only two plays the entire first quarter - a Jet Sweep Choice out of our Wild Beaver formation, and a 5 Wide set that sent the weakside slot receiver on a 10 yard in-route over the middle," said user tlu306. "Jacquizz Rodgers was able to get at least 5 each time we ran the Jet Sweep Choice, and they could not find a corner big enough or a linebacker fast enough to stop Darrell Catchings over the middle. Those two plays were all we needed."
After taking a 14-7 lead after 1 quarter, the Beavers took control of the game on a pick 6 to begin the 2nd quarter. They went on to take a 28-10 half-time lead.
It was now 1:30 AM CST, and user mubulldog14 had work in the morning. He faced a tough decision - continue to play the second half, yet face the next day with less than 5 hours of sleep, or turn off the system.
"I feel bad, but I didn't think I would have a chance in the second half anyways," explained user mubulldog14 on his decision to quit. "User tlu306 was dominating me with Catchings and Rodgers, and I had no answer. He won this fair and square, and, at least in the second game, was clearly the better player. I just wish we could have finished our first game because it was shaping up to be the first user-v-user classic in the Road to the National 'Ship."
The CPU finished out the game for the Heels, and user tlu306 took advantage with a 45-17 win.
Next for the Tar Heels is user Smikal and the University of Kentucky.
