Purdue came out sluggish against the Hawkeyes, falling behind 14-7 in the 2nd quarter. When the Boilermakers received the ball back with less than a minute and a half left in the first half, they put on a surge that the Hawkeyes could not contain. The Boilermakers scored on four quick plays, capped off by a 19 yard pass from Robert Marve to Gabe Holmes over the middle. Purdue's defense stuffed Iowa on three straight plays to get the ball back with enough time for a few plays of their own. Marve threw a bomb to WR Raheem Mostert for 33 yards to get the Boilermakers in field goal range. Time was called with 3 seconds left in the half, followed by a Carson Wiggs 46 yard field goal. This put the Boilermakers on top 17-14 going into the half.
Coach Davis railed on his team for their poor play the first quarter and a half. This did not fall on deaf ears. Ralph Bolden received the 2nd half opening kickoff on the 3 yard line, broke several tackles, and took it home for six (24-14).
Iowa would quickly score on a 77 yard run by Jason White to get back to within three points (24-21). From their Purdue held Iowa to only a field goal more and taking the victory 38-24.
Next up at cross state rival Indiana next week. "We are surging late and trying to earn a bid to a BCS bowl" Davis said at the press conference after the game. The 9-2 (6-1) Boilermakers have won 6 straight since falling to undefeated Minnesota 17-2 to open Big Ten play.
Also noted in the game, Heisman candidate Ralph Bolden has broken the single season rushing record at Purdue (now at 1550 yards on the ground).
