Williams was Brilliant on the BIg Stage
Eagles Claim First Ever Conference Title, Punch Ticket to BCS Title Game
Charlotte, North Carolina-- Boston College looked nervous early on in its first appearance in the ACC Title game getting gashed by big plays left and right, but the Eagles maintained their poise and put together a championship performance. Williams had been relatively quiet for the past several weeks but absolutely exploded when his team needed him the most. Williams tallied over 200 yards rushing including a career high 5 scores. He earned the tough yards but he also broke off some huge runs for the Eagles. BC gave up big plays and a bunch of points in the first half but responded by shutting down the Hokies in the second half.
This Sack of Thomas Gave Quinn a School Record
BC couldn't have drawn up any worse of a start than the one that happened. Virginia Tech held them to a 3-and-out on the first Eagles drive and then on the first VT play from scrimmage the Hokies struck with an 80 yard bomb. Undeterred the Eagles would strike back. Rettig would find Swigert for a touchdown as they have done for a school record amount of times this season.
Swigert Finds the Endzone Yet Again
Williams and David Wilson for Virginia Tech would trade touchdowns in the rest of the first quarter with Williams finding paydirt twice and Wilson once. The second quarter would turn to be even more of a scoring explosion that the first. Rettig would make a critical mistake throwing a pick six but Williams would save him running in a touchdown from 68 yards out. Logan Thomas would show off his wheels for the Hokies scoring a rushing TD from 36 yards out but Bobbu Swigert would return the ensuing kick off 103 yards for another score. The scoring barrage would come to an end with a VT touchdown pass and a Williams TD run with 20 seconds before the half.
I don't know what Coach Petersen said to his defense at the half, but it certainly got them playing well. After the game Coach Petersen said, "I basically told them that they were playing like the 2011 BC defense and they better step up, and they did just that." The defense not only pitched a second half shutout but also held VT under 50 total yards in the half. The third quarter would feature only one score, yet another TD from Rettig to Swigert.
Swigert Lays Out for the Catch
BC would only score one more touchdown on the game but it would be more than enough with the defense playing better. The Eagles would also add two field goals to pad the lead. The final touchdown scored by Williams would be his record setting fifth.
Willaims Scores TD #5
With the victory BC could officially celebrate its first conference title. BC moves to 13-0, a school record, and all but clinches a spot in the most prestigious game, the BCS National Title. Boston College will now have plenty of time on its hands to rest up and prepare for the biggest game in school history. BC will either face Oregon State or the winner of the Big Ten Title. Final: 62-35
